We are no longer a Middle Class America but rather we are in the same ratio of have and have nots as it was in the 20s

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

From Paul Krugman of the NY Times

Since the late 1970s the America I knew has unraveled. We’re no longer a middle-class society, in which the benefits of economic growth are widely shared: between 1979 and 2005 the real income of the median household rose only 13 percent, but the income of the richest 0.1% of Americans rose 296 percent.

Actually the income for blacks for that period has been -8%.

I received a joke…sort of…The Difference Between A Republican & A Democrat

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Please click the links in the text below…they are links to many good articles adding to the discussion of what is going on in the USA and the direction the US is headed if not corrected quickly.
So I received a joke from a friend today that was surely one of those forwarded…forwarded…forwarded…forwarded nightmares that seem to take up an inordinate amount of internet bandwidth.  Why is it that the crap in the internet does that and the truth does not…anyway….  The joke plays on some sort of implied stereotypes which don’t standup as anyone looks at the news from the past 12-20 years.  One thing the joke teller forgot to mention is the fact that many many homeless people are veterans who need medical and psychological care.  That is just a sin for America to NOT address that issue directly.  Why are there so many Vietnam Vets on the streets?  Why do we have such a huge homeless population in the first place?  Isn’t it amazing that the homeless problem came about during Ronald Regan’s administration due to the closing of mental institutions….something the jokester must have forgotten.   Another thing the jokester apparently has not heard of is the $9 trillion debt that America now owes to a few nations of the world including China which is arguably our greatest potential enemy economically, socially, politically and militarily.  Some day that $9 trillion will need to be paid (um…your Federal taxes pay the INTEREST on that debt it does not even touch the debt principle so America is paying the minimum amount on its credit card bill basically) and of course Ronald Regan who raised the debt level to $5 trillion is dead so he won’t have to deal with the blame….George W Bush has his 100,000 acre ranch in Paraguay so he will not take the blame as it looks like a Democrat will very possibly win the White House next time around and Bill Clinton drove the deficit down.  $9 trillion is the largest tax bill to ever hit any group of people on earth and it is hitting us by hurting our economy now and possibly destroying it later.  Thanks George Bush the First and George W Bush the second and Ronnie for nothing!
I could go on…this is too easy.  Here is the joke and the response repurposing of the joke is below.  Try not to laugh too hard or cry….for one reason or another.

The Difference Between A Republican & A Democrat
Fred Thompson and Hillary Clinton  were walking down the street when they came to a homeless person.
The Republican, Fred Thompson, gave the homeless person his business card and told him to come to his office for a job. He then took $20 out of his pocket and gave it to the homeless person.
Hillary was very impressed, so when they came to another homeless  person, she decided to help. She walked over to the homeless person and gave him directions to the welfare office. She then reached into Thompson’s pocket and got out $20. She kept $15 for her administrative fees and gave the homeless person $5..
Now, do you understand the difference?
< >
And here is the alternate view of that joke again with a ton of links to click and read about what is happening in America concerning the circumstances of our homeless friend in the joke above-
The Republican Fred Thompson was driven in a Limo to the area in which he found the homeless person he was going to have a photo op with but Fred actually drove the final 2 blocks in his Red Pickup Truck to try to pretend to fit in with the people on the street.  Fred had to hang up on his lobbyist friend he was talking to on the phone as he drove up.  Fred looked in his own wallet and moved the $50s and $100s out of the way and said he would give the homeless guy $20 if the homeless guy worked all day carrying cinder blocks to the top of Fred’s 3 story tall mansion from his below ground garage where a lobbyist party room was to be built.  When done at the end of the day Fred gave the guy $8 saying times were tough on the set of Law and Order and said he had another $5 for a full days of cinder block hauling if the homeless guy returned the next day.

Fred rented a Red Pickup Truck and some people bought it hook line and sinker.
Ok so Fred’s persona of a normal guy is a sham…back to the joke….
Meanwhile Hillary saw that the homeless guy needed help because the Pell Grants had been reduced by President George W Bush as well as another huge educational grant program that made it hard for the homeless guy to be retrained.  She said that Bush had eliminated and cut other programs that helped the poor while giving the rich huge tax breaks.  The homeless guy said he worked fulltime for Wal Mart but Wal Mart really didn’t care that he was still homeless.  The homeless guy said he had almost gone bankrupt after contracting a disease for which expensive treatment was needed.  As the rest of the Democratic candidates talked to the homeless guy about how he had gotten there they saw many more homeless people in the same location and said that their platforms would aim at helping the poor especially for Health Care which had fully bankrupted many of his friends on the street which is why they were there.  The Vietnam Vet said he didn’t like what was happening in Iraq which was based on a pack lies and saw many people not really making it in America financially while others were making obscene amounts of money and many were making money on the War in Iraq as thousands died making those rich people richer.  More about the growing income gap and more about the huge growth of the poor and more about the widening disparity gap  and more about the rich getting richer while screwing the poor.
Meanwhile Fred Thompson drove by in a rented Red Pickup Truck and answered the phone as his lobbyist buddy called him back hoping he can protect another asbestos maker from legal action or perhaps they discussed the fact that Fred Thompson illegally warned Nixon about an impending investigation as Congress was looking into Watergate or one of a number of issues.
I think the moral of the joke is that we either swim together and help each other or we could very possibly drown as bad things happen to everyone.  Shouldn’t the top 10% of income earners that own 80-90% of all economic assets of America’s $14 trillion economy help those at the bottom of the economic barrel?  Interesting thing is that with the present health care plan those in the top 10% or above can easily become bankrupt for reasons of health care problems and circumstances beyond their control.  Have you ever been underinsured or lacked health insurance?  I have and it is not fun.
If you were the homeless guy what would you want?

Republican talking points from 1992 all proven wrong

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

This is pretty laughable actually.  Dan Quayle and Al Gore debate and Quayle’s opening remarks are all laughable talking points which were all proven wrong.  The topics that Quayle covers are truly Republican fearmongering at its best.  Al Gore gave a somewhat flowery and very pertinent opening speech relating to the city in which they were in while Quayle went for the jugular in doling out the fear in big heaps.  This is something that the Democrats have never learned…if you couple the fact that the Democrats are actually trying to help 98% of Americans plus going for the jugular by highlighting what the Republicans are doing to those 98% to the benefit of the top 2%…those two things will add up to a win.  But will the Democrats do it effectively?
Video is here.
Quayle said-
1- Clinton’s economic plan will make things much much worse.
2- Clinton will increase spending.
3- Clinton will make government bigger.
4- Clinton will lose jobs for America.
5- Clinton does not have the character to be President.
Health Care, legal reform and on and on.
You need to have a President you can really trust.  Can you really trust Bill Clinton?
http://www.pollingreport.com/beyle.htm
In a late October 2000 Gallup Poll, 57% of the respondents approved of the job Clinton was doing as president. By comparison, in a mid-October 1960 Gallup Poll, Dwight Eisenhower received a 58%
positive job approval rating, and in a mid-October 1988 Gallup Poll, 51% gave Ronald Reagan a positive job rating. Voter News Service exit polls taken at polling places on Election Day 2000 indicated Clinton’s positive job performance rating nationally among actual voters was also 57%.
As for Admiral Stockdale…he was a military leader turned Academician and I am sure he was well informed on both counts.

President Bush has legislation written pardoning himself and his cronies in crime from war crimes

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Bush sees the writing on the wall in what he has done and is proactively writing a law pardoning himself and his cronies in crime from the war crimes they are guilty of.  Video is here
You DO know that he personally has purchased 100,000 acres in Paraguay.  Story is here  and story is here

Apparently he will head down south if his prospects of war crime charges head south too.

It is interesting in that he seems to be doing more planning for his avoidance of war crime charges than the planning that was done for the Iraq War.

Slaves built the US embassy in Iraq

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

What has the US become?

Slave labor used to contruct U.S. Embassy In Baghdad.

During testimony before the House Oversight Committee today, Rory Mayberry, a former subcontract employee of the firm responsible for the construction of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, said he believes that at least 52 Filipino nationals had been kidnapped to work on the embassy project. He testified:

Mr. Chairman, when the airplane took off and the captain announced that we were heading to Baghdad, all you-know-what broke out on the airplane. The men started shouting, it wasn’t until the security guy working for First Kuwaiti waved an MP5 in the air that the men settled down. They realized that they had no other choice but to go to Baghdad. Let me spell it out clearly: I believe these men were kidnapped by First Kuwaiti to work at the US Embassy… I’ve read the State Department Inspector General’s report on the construction of the embassy. Mr. Chairman, it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on. This is a cover-up and I’m glad that I’ve had the opportunity to set the record straight.

The Shock Doctrine

Monday, September 17th, 2007

DemocracyNow! Featured author Naomi Klein discussing her new video and book The Shock Doctrine.  You can see her movie at her homepage
http://www.naomiklein.org/shock-doctrine/short-film

You can see her interview on DemocracyNow! Here
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=07/09/17/1411235

The shock doctrine, like all doctrines, is a philosophy of power. It’s a philosophy about how to achieve your political and economic goals. And this is a philosophy that holds that the best way, the best time, to push through radical free-market ideas is in the aftermath of a major shock. Now, that shock could be an economic meltdown. It could be a natural disaster. It could be a terrorist attack. It could be a war. But the idea, as you just saw in the film, is that these crises, these disasters, these shocks soften up whole societies. They discombobulate them. People lose their bearings. And a window opens up, just like the window in the interrogation chamber. And in that window, you can push through what economists call “economic shock therapy.” That’s sort of extreme country makeovers. It’s everything all at once. It’s not, you know, one reform here, one reform there, but the kind of radical change that we saw in Russia in the 1990s, that Paul Bremer tried to push through in Iraq after the invasion. So that’s the shock doctrine.

About the book and short film-

In THE SHOCK DOCTRINE, Naomi Klein explodes the myth that the global free market triumphed democratically. Exposing the thinking, the money trail and the puppet strings behind the world-changing crises and wars of the last four decades, The Shock Doctrine is the gripping story of how America’s “free market” policies have come to dominate the world– through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries.

At the most chaotic juncture in Iraq’s civil war, a new law is unveiled that would allow Shell and BP to claim the country’s vast oil reserves…. Immediately following September 11, the Bush Administration quietly out-sources the running of the “War on Terror” to Halliburton and Blackwater…. After a tsunami wipes out the coasts of Southeast Asia, the pristine beaches are auctioned off to tourist resorts…. New Orleans’s residents, scattered from Hurricane Katrina, discover that their public housing, hospitals and schools will never be reopened…. These events are examples of “the shock doctrine”: using the public’s disorientation following massive collective shocks – wars, terrorist attacks, or natural disasters — to achieve control by imposing economic shock therapy. Sometimes, when the first two shocks don’t succeed in wiping out resistance, a third shock is employed: the electrode in the prison cell or the Taser gun on the streets.

Based on breakthrough historical research and four years of on-the-ground reporting in disaster zones, The Shock Doctrine vividly shows how disaster capitalism – the rapid-fire corporate reengineering of societies still reeling from shock – did not begin with September 11, 2001. The book traces its origins back fifty years, to the University of Chicago under Milton Friedman, which produced many of the leading neo-conservative and neo-liberal thinkers whose influence is still profound in Washington today. New, surprising connections are drawn between economic policy, “shock and awe” warfare and covert CIA-funded experiments in electroshock and sensory deprivation in the 1950s, research that helped write the torture manuals used today in Guantanamo Bay.

The Shock Doctrine follows the application of these ideas though our contemporary history, showing in riveting detail how well-known events of the recent past have been deliberate, active theatres for the shock doctrine, among them: Pinochet’s coup in Chile in 1973, the Falklands War in 1982, the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989, the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Asian Financial crisis in 1997 and Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Alan Greenspan finally speaks the truth. Where have you been all these years Mr. Greenspan?

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

It is amazing to think that so few leaders around the world and in the US as well have openly stated exactly what the Iraq War was all about.  The weakening and keeping weak the nation that sits on a huge supply of easy to extract oil.  Alan Greenspan steps up to the plate and speaks the truth.  He also said the economic policy of President Bill Clinton was a lot more disciplined and was a better plan for America than Bush’s economic policy has been.  Why couldn’t Greenspan speak the truth years ago when it meant something as opposed to now when Bush is simply a lame duck President waiting out is term?

The economy is a golden house on a shining hill and we are told it is doing great!!!

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

The economy is rampaging!!!!  Wall Street is up on a huge bull market…OVERALL income is up…uh…investors in military companies are doing great…mmmm…Apple has gone from $24 a couple years ago to $134 yesterday…uh…um…but then again the American consumer is saying that our economy is in the toilet and a recession is almost a certainty.  The recent bailout of the banking industry as a result of their nearly-fraudulent “less than prime” lending plans sucked almost $20 billion into the Socialistic saving of that industry which had paid untold billions into bonuses for well established millionaires and one brand new billbionaire.  Americans are scared and they are the ones that should know.  Story is here

Study: Health Care Premiums Up 78% Since 2001

In health care news, a new study shows the cost of health care premiums for workers and their employers has risen nearly eighty percent since 2001. The rise is more than four times the size of wage hikes and inflation over the same period. The Kaiser Family Foundation says premiums saw their lowest rise this year at six percent. But that still outpaced a less than four percent rise in employee wages. Up to two million people are said to lose health insurance each year.

Another US industry is about to be destroyed by outsourcing.

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

Mexican long haul trucking within the USA will spell they end of the US Trucking Industry.  A pilot program has been approved to see how it will go for one year but if the trucks from Mexico have no restrictions eventually then why can’t you hire a trucker from Mexico from a Mexican trucking company to drive from California to New York with your load…and back and forth and back and forth.  This guy is paid way less than half of an American driver so won’t that be great for business?  Um…what about all of the American drivers?  Um…what about the safety issue?  Also part of this deal is the port usage.  So now the transportation from the ports to the US market is set up…what about Mexican ports?  This is the next part of the puzzle to be outsourced.  US ports are huge and they have a lot of good union jobs…Mexican ports have workers that make a lot less.  Why would these companies unloading ships keep sending ships to US ports when they can go to West Coast Mexican ports that are now as easily accessible to the USA as US ports are?  Story is here
