President Obama = President Eisenhower

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Don’t know about you, but I found last night’s string of quotes from President Eisenhower just amazing. By now, very many of us have come of age in an America where that Republican icon would be to the left of any Democrat on the national scene today. But in post-World War II America, President Eisenhower represented the Republican Party and the American center:

  • “Workers have a right to organize into unions and to bargain collectively with their employers. And a strong, free labor movement is an invigorating and necessary part of our industrial society.”
  • “Only a fool would try to deprive working men and women of their right to join the union of their choice.”
  • “Should any political party attempt to abolish Social Security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things, but their number is negligible and they are stupid.”

Do you think of yourself as a centrist? And what policies do you think define the American center in 2011?

If this is a Socialist then this is what we need all day long!

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

1- DOW hits 12,000 so the screed that Obama is a Scary Socialist does not hold water. If this is a Socialist then this is what we need all day long!

2- Republicans and ESPECIALLY Teabaggers WANT all the money concentrated at the top and for the super rich to “allow” us to make some money. As it is the top 1% owns more wealth than the bottom 90%. This does not make for a stable economy nor does it in any way make for a stable society. Your MOM said “You need to share with others” Economists say diversification is the best route to avoid economic problems. The Conservative concepts of Reaganomics which MADE the super rich even SUPER RICHER are failing because the profits are not trickling down and the money is staying at the top hence our economy hurts.

3- The rich use more of the commons to make their money. If I make a zillion dollars I need educated people with expendable income to buy my items. I need my employees to get to work. My products these days get here via ships so I use ports and roads. My workers need good food/clean air/clean water/clean environment so they live longer lives and are productive. All of these things MAKE ME MONEY. So I should pay more back to society for keeping my people healthy etc. This is contrary to Reaganomics and what Teabaggers spittle at me when they proclaim “They made it so they should keep it” Uh…no. they used people they used the COMMONS they used air/food/water/roads/the grid/gasoline etc. ALL brought to you in a very large part by me…and you…and them. SO those who make more need to pay more because they are making their money BECAUSE OF ME…AND YOU. No one got rich sitting alone in a cave in the mountains…for a reason.

Another example- Afghanistan has $4Trillion in precious metals in the ground…and $0 in infrastructure. No one will extract anything until the government makes a road and builds a port. WHY? Because the FREE MARKET isn’t going to eat that cost…so EVERYONE will pay for it…therefore those corporations should pay taxes as they pay for the profits derived from the government/people outlaying the funds to make the roads and ports and such. This was America not long ago…then the American programs built infrastructure allowing America to become rich. If the Teabaggers were around back then this would not have happened. THATS SOCIALISM!!!! THATS RIGHT!!!!! AND THAT’S HOW WE GOT RICH!!!!!

Financial commission finds economic meltdown was avoidable

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

But the bottom line is that Conservative concepts of less oversight…less regulation…more corporate freedom and the concepts of “Trickle Down Economics”  is the reason for the meltdown.

The commission that investigated the crisis casts a wide net of blame, faulting two administrations, the Federal Reserve and other regulators for permitting a calamitous concoction: shoddy mortgage lending, the excessive packaging and sale of loans to investors and risky bets on securities backed by the loans.

“The greatest tragedy would be to accept the refrain that no one could have seen this coming and thus nothing could have been done,” the panel wrote in the report’s conclusions, which were read by The New York Times. “If we accept this notion, it will happen again.”

Jon Stewart Demonstrates Just How Often Fox News Personalities Reference Nazis

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Last week Megyn Kelly notably pushed back when guest Richard Socarides claimed that Fox News opinion media types were guilty of making similar sort of Nazi references that Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) made on the house floor earlier last week. Tonight Jon Stewart challenged his production staff to find evidence of Nazi references on Fox News within 24 hours of Kelly’s comments and the results were not pretty. (Funny though!)

The following segment opens with a quick recap of Olbermann’s departure, before launching in a tour de force that is sure to make loyal fans of The Daily Show very happy.

President Obama is about to give the State of the Union address tomorrow

Monday, January 24th, 2011

But the thing he should do is to turn to FDR for his speech.  Story is located here

President Roosevelt: “As our Nation has grown in size and stature, however—as our industrial economy expanded—these political rights proved inadequate to assure us equality in the pursuit of happiness.

We have come to a clear realization of the fact that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. “Necessitous men are not free men.” People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.

In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all regardless of station, race, or creed.

Among these are:

The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the Nation;

The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;

The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;

The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;

The right of every family to a decent home;

The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;

The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;

The right to a good education.

All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being.”

Teaparty favorite Texas Governor Rick Perry rails against Socialism and “Governoment Intervention” until they need it then they are happy to take that financial aid.

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Turns out Texas was the state that depended the most on those very stimulus funds to plug nearly 97% of its shortfall for fiscal 2010, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Texas, which crafts a budget every two years, was facing a $6.6 billion shortfall for its 2010-2011 fiscal years. It plugged nearly all of that deficit with $6.4 billion in Recovery Act money, allowing it to leave its $9.1 billion rainy day fund untouched.

Palin to be prosecuted for inciting violence if she visits Australia, attorney says

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

Sarah Palin better watch out.

Under Australian law, inciting violence is a serious crime: an offense which could even trigger the prosecution of members of the US political class and mainstream media who called for the assassination of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, according to his attorney.

Comments by Robert Stary, Assange’s Melbourne-based lawyer, were carried in the US by a Friday broadcast of National Public Radio’s Morning Edition.

“Our main concern is really the possible extradition to the US,” he said. “We’ve been troubled by the sort of rhetoric that has come out of various commentators and principally Republican politicians — Sarah Palin and the like — saying Mr. Assange should be executed, assassinated.”

Commentary: 14th Amendment outlines Founding Fathers’ intentions on “anchor babies”

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

The goal of some Republican members of Congress today is to undermine the standard of citizenship for every baby born on U.S. soil sealed by the 14th Amendment. The new vision is that the children of undocumented immigrants, the vast majority being Latino, shouldn’t be included.

To drum up support, backers trounce on historical accuracy.

They pitch the idea that when Congress enacted the 14th Amendment in 1868, all they had in mind was rectifying the sins of that post-slavery era. In particular, the need was to address the Dred Scott decision, which said people of African descent could not be citizens.

The claim is that the framers of the 14th Amendment didn’t mean to include the children of immigrants in the citizenship clauses.

Problem is, you did exist. And, thankfully, researchers have gone back to the original records. The D.C.-based Immigration Policy Center, in particular, has done a marvelous job of digging deeper.

Republican leader looks to lower % of Medicare coverage of health care for elderly

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

So when as a nation America decides to pay less to cover the health care costs for people who do not have money doesn’t that mean that the plan is to kill those people off faster?  How can there be any other end result other than the people cannot get care and when that happens they die off earlier.  This plan is from the same people that JUST got done with the “Death Panel” lie and the “Obama’s gonna kill Grandma” lie and how awful “Socialized Medicine” lie is.  So they just got done telling us how people were going to die with Obama’s plan which was a lie….however the truth is they want to cut coverage of health costs to people (elderly) who have almost $0 in income and actually they want to remove that income by changing Social Security into a profit making system on Wall Street.  Imagine being (well there are MILLIONS of people who lived this) on Social Security or living on investments in Wall Street and seeing your income drop to almost $0 as they did over the past couple years.  This is the Republican plan for the elderly.  This was explained in detail by their Legislative Leader Eric Cantor.  Story is located here

Glenn Beck’s Attacks on Frances Fox Piven Trigger Death Threats

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

It isn’t clear whether Beck actually believes what he says and writes about Piven, or simply uses it to whip up his followers’ anger and resentments. We’ll never know what’s in Beck’s mind. But what’s obvious is that this tactic is not simply aimed at Piven, an acclaimed academic but hardly a well-known figure in American politics. It is, instead, intended to discredit Obama’s liberal policy agenda and to destroy the progressive movement (unions, consumer and community groups, environmentalists, women’s and civil rights organizations, and gay rights groups) that has pushed the president and the Democratic Party to be bolder, as they did in last year’s health-care battle.

This maneuver is hardly new. As far back as Joseph McCarthy and Richard Nixon, Republican politicians and hired strategists — like Murray Chotiner, Ed Meese, Michael Deaver, Karl Rove, Pat Buchanan and Frank Luntz — have perfected the art of linking liberal Democrats to communists, socialists, radicals, subversives, “welfare queens,” and terrorists. These ideas might seem crazy, but they are, like Roger Ailes, the communications guru for Nixon, Reagan, and George H. W. Bush, and now Glenn Beck’s boss, crazy like Fox News.

December 2008: A pair of “Patriot” movement radicals — the father-son team of Bruce and Joshua Turnidge, who wanted “to attack the political infrastructure” — threaten a bank in Woodburn, Oregon, with a bomb in the hopes of extorting money that would end their financial difficulties, for which they blamed the government. Instead, the bomb goes off and kills two police officers. The men eventually are convicted and sentenced to death for the crime.

December 2008: In Belfast, Maine, police discover the makings of a nuclear “dirty bomb” in the basement of a white supremacist shot dead by his wife. The man, who was independently wealthy, reportedly was agitated about the election of President Obama and was crafting a plan to set off the bomb.

January 2011: A 22-year-old gunman named Jared Lee Loughner with a long grudge against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and a paranoid hatred of the government walks into a public Giffords event and shoots her in the head, then keeps firing, killing six people and wounding 14 more. Gifford miraculously survives.

The vote against ObamaCare was not what the American People want. Republicans lose.

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

A recent Associated Press poll found that 41 percent of those surveyed opposed the reform law and 40 percent supported it. But when asked what Congress should do, 43 percent said the law should be modified so that it does more to change the health-care system. Another 19 percent said it should be left as it is.

More troubling for the GOP, the AP poll found that just 26 percent of respondents wanted Congress to repeal the reform law completely. A recent Washington Post poll found support for outright repeal at 18 percent; a Marist poll pegged it at 30 percent.

In other words, what House Republicans just voted to do may be the will of the Tea Party, but it’s not “the will of the people.”

Meanwhile, Obama’s approval ratings climb higher every week. Somebody change the subject. Quick!

England’s Parliament taking dim view of Glenn Beck

Friday, January 21st, 2011

The Independent article quoted Andrew Neil, who said:

“My own view is [Fox] is out of control”.

Neil told Richard Bacon on BBC Radio 5 Live recently:

“I think Rupert Murdoch has lost control of it. I know from sources he’s not happy with a lot that appears on it and I think he’s lost over the Glenn Becks and the O’Reillys”.

In October 2009, Waitrose became one of a number of UK firms to pull all advertising on Fox News in response to comments made about President Obama. It was reported just last week that the broadcast of Glenn Beck’s show in the UK has run without any commercials for nearly 11 months in response to his incendiary comments. Such great concern has been caused by Beck that there is an ongoing campaign both in the UK and the US to stop Glenn Beck and deter companies from advertising during his show. I am pleased and extremely encouraged that companies in the UK feel strongly enough about the issue to withhold advertising. It demonstrates that the anti-Semitic and generally divisive, incendiary and prejudicial language that has been broadcast in the UK will not be tolerated in this country. However, it is important that these issues continue to be raised and that TV executives are challenged on such matters.

If Glenn Beck were here today I would say to him: “Glenn Beck, you are a bigot. You bring shame to your country, not because you lack balance, but because you are an unthinking buffoon. Rupert Murdoch tolerates you because you are his useful idiot. He uses you to get a foothold in the doors of the powerful. Like his phone-hacking journalists and his pugnacious leader-writers in Australia, you are expendable. Let us hope he disposes of your nasty brand of intolerance sooner rather than later.”

Poll: Less Than 1 Percent Favor Repealing Coverage For Pre-Existing Conditions

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Contrary to Republican talking points, recent polling has consistently found lukewarm support for the GOP push to repeal the Affordable Care Act in its entirety. Today, a New York Times/CBS poll shows that 40 percent of Americans support repeal and 48 percent oppose it when given the choice between fully eliminating the law and letting it stand. But as the Washington Post‘s Greg Sargent observes, it’s the poll’s internal results that are really interesting:

Reagan was almost announced as senile in 1986

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

CBS’ Leslie Stahl recalled in her 2000 book, “Reporting Live,” that she was instructed not to ask then-President Reagan any questions during a 1986 meeting.

“Reagan didn’t seem to know who I was. He gave me a distant look with those milky eyes and shook my hand weakly,” she wrote. “Oh, my, he’s gonzo, I thought. I have to go out on the lawn tonight and tell my countrymen that the president of the United States is a doddering space cadet. My heart began to hammer with the import…I was aware of the delicacy with which I would have to write my script. But I was quite sure of my diagnosis.”

But President Reagan seemed to sharpen after Stahl mentioned that her husband, Aaron Latham, was a screenwriter. The president pulled Latham to the couch and began to talk about movie ideas.

Stahl “had come that close to reporting that Reagan was senile. I had every intention of telling the American people what I had observed in the Oval Office.”

Health Reform by the numbers

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

Though most of the major changes under the Affordable Care Act won’t take effect until 2014, Democrats deliberately frontloaded the law with key reforms early on, in hopes of building political support for the measure. They’ve now trotted out those benefits as the Republicans have made health care repeal the first priority of their new House majority—even creating a map that details the benefits of reform by each congressional district. Here’s a by-the-numbers rundown* of how the Democrats’ health care legislation has affected Americans so far—and what the GOP is threatening to take away with Wednesday’s scheduled vote on a repeal bill:

So let’s ask the Founding Fathers EXACTLY what they thought of a government run health program similar to ObamaCare

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

In July of 1798, Congress passed – and President John Adams signed – “An Act for the Relief of Sick and Disabled Seamen.” The law authorized the creation of a government operated marine hospital service and mandated that privately employed sailors be required to purchase health care insurance.

Keep in mind that the 5th Congress did not really need to struggle over the intentions of the drafters of the Constitutions in creating this Act as many of its members were the drafters of the Constitution.

And when the Bill came to the desk of President John Adams for signature, I think it’s safe to assume that the man in that chair had a pretty good grasp on what the framers had in mind.

They are not directly responsible but calling for violence and the rhetoric they use are drivers for the violence that results

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

You know, who knows what any one crazy person is going to do? But the problem is there’s developing a pattern here.

That’s why I’m saying yes, I think it’s irresponsible, and I think it’s a bit of a straw man, that people are claiming that, you know, Beck and Palin are being blamed. Mostly, people are saying they’re not being blamed for this particular incident. They are being blamed, as well as some on the left should be blamed, for inciting people generally.

It probably — we don’t know for sure. It probably wasn’t a driver in this case, but it’s a driver in so many other cases. And I agree with David that you need to look out for the effect your words are having on the sane people. But I think you also need to worry about that fraction of one percent who just might be driven over the edge.

Specifically how Health Care Reform..ObamaCare…will hurt one state IF REPEALED

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

In March 2010, Congress passed and President Obama signed into law historic health care reform legislation, the Affordable Care Act. Millions of Americans are already benefitting from this law: insurers are no longer allowed to discriminate against children and others who are sick; small businesses are receiving billions of dollars in tax credits to provide health care coverage for their employees; and seniors are saving money on prescription drugs and receiving free preventive care through Medicare.
House Republicans will soon vote to repeal these important new benefits, increasing health care costs for millions of Americans, causing many families to lose coverage, and increasing the national debt by over $1 trillion. This analysis describes the impact of repeal of the Affordable Care Act in North Dakota, which is represented by Rep. Rick Berg. It finds that repeal of the health reform law would have significant consequences in the state by:

Thom Hartmann on the “Becking” of America

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

In order to challenge the rise in violent rhetoric in America, we need to label it in a concrete and memorable way. Chip Berlet presents an attempt to do this in The Becking of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

This interview with Thom Hartmann explains the term and challenges the false frame of equivalency that attempts to paint liberals and conservatives as being equally responsible for the rise in violence in public discourse.

Video is located here

From a moral viewpoint Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is the victim of demagogues such as Glenn Beck and his allies at Fox News and in the Tea Party Movement. This is not about legal liability but about moral culpability. This is about a nation that has lost its moral compass.

Some of us progressive writers have been warning about this dangerous trend for several years. This includes my colleagues Fred Clarkson, David Neiwert, Sara Robinson, John Amato, Adele Stan, and others. We blame right-wing demagogues like Glenn Beck and Ann Coulter and a culture that tolerates their vicious targeting of scapegoats.

Now the shootings have created a new word floating across cyberspace: “becking.” To be “becked” is to be held up as such an evil and destructive person that someone, somewhere, will interpret it as a call to eliminate that problem through violence.

I made similar assertions after the murder of Dr. Tiller in a post at Religion Dispatches, “Who Will Rid Me of This Troublesome Doctor?”: Bill O’Reilly, King Henry II, and George Tiller” Here is what I wrote then:

Capitalist Case For Nonprofit Health Insurance

Monday, January 17th, 2011

f you want to know what went wrong with our health care system and the best way to fix it, all you have to do is look back a few decades to a time when health care was a community concern, considered as essential as any public utility. It should be again, not just because it makes sense but also because it’s the most profitable way to go.

The irony in the current debate over a “public option” health plan is that we once had a form of socialized medicine. Blue Cross, the most recognizable name, began in 1929 as a tax-exempt insurer covering a community of teachers in Dallas. Blue Shield was started as a tax-exempt insurer to cover employees of mining and lumber companies in the Pacific Northwest, with a group of local doctors providing care through a service bureau.

19 Facts About The Deindustrialization Of America That Will Blow Your Mind

Monday, January 17th, 2011

The United States is rapidly becoming the very first “post-industrial” nation on the globe.  All great economic empires eventually become fat and lazy and squander the great wealth that their forefathers have left them, but the pace at which America is accomplishing this is absolutely amazing.  It was America that was at the forefront of the industrial revolution.  It was America that showed the world how to mass produce everything from automobiles to televisions to airplanes.  It was the great American manufacturing base that crushed Germany and Japan in World War II.  But now we are witnessing the deindustrialization of America.  Tens of thousands of factories have left the United States in the past decade alone.  Millions upon millions of manufacturing jobs have been lost in the same time period.  The United States has become a nation that consumes everything in sight and yet produces increasingly little.  Do you know what our biggest export is today?  Waste paper.  Yes, trash is the number one thing that we ship out to the rest of the world as we voraciously blow our money on whatever the rest of the world wants to sell to us.  The United States has become bloated and spoiled and our economy is now  just a shadow of what it once was.  Once upon a time America could literally outproduce the rest of the world combined.  Today that is no longer true, but Americans sure do consume more than anyone else in the world.  If the deindustrialization of America continues at this current pace, what possible kind of a future are we going to be leaving to our children?

You might be a Republican if……

Monday, January 17th, 2011

You Might be a Republican If……….

1) You believe George W. Bush’s redistribution of middle-class tax cuts to the top 1% of tax-payers was good for America, but Obama’s plan to return it to the middle class is ‘socialism.’

2) You believe stem cells are living human beings, but thousands of Iraqi children are ‘expendable collateral damage.’

3) You believe tax cuts for billionaires is a great idea, yet you wonder why the economy has stalled, your job just got outsourced to India, and oil company executives receive $400,000,000.00 retirement packages.

4) You believe the surge worked because the violence in Iraq is back to 2006 levels, which is only horrible, compared to what it was in 2007; intolerable. Besides, Brit Hume said so.

5) You think trial lawyers are harmful to America, yet you support prosecuting some guy in Muncie Indiana who burned his 99¢ American flag that was made in China by forced child labor.

‘Thoughtful Discourse’? Pawlenty Says U.S. Tilts ‘Everyday, A Little Bit More’ Toward Tyranny

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

This Administration is not fundamentally different from 8 years under Bush but the panic is more intense under this Administration.  At the end of the interview it was apparent either Pawlenty did not understand the simple premise of Stewart’s question or Pawlenty was disingenuous in his sidestepping the answer.  Either way Jon Stewart AGAIN proves he is possibly one of the best interviewers in Journalism…but he is NOT a Journalist…which means what for Journalists of the day?  It means they are outgunned by a comedian almost nightly.

The shootings in Tucson last weekend happened to coincide with former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty’s (R) media tour to promote his new book. In various interviews, Pawlenty has discussed the role violent rhetoric played in Tucson and in politics. While the former governor said that the Tucson shooter is solely responsible for his actions, Pawlenty acknowledged that political rhetoric could be toned down. “I think we can all benefit from a more thoughtful discourse,” he said on Fox News. Pawlenty even criticized Sarah Palin’s now infamous crosshairs graphic. “It wouldn’t have been my style to put the crosshairs on there,” he said on ABC. “There’s a line there as it relates to, you know, basic civility, decency, respect and, and not trying to invoke violence.”

Fearing High Gas Prices, Sean Hannity Proposes Re-Invading Iraq and Kuwait To ‘Take All Their Oil’

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

Tonight’s Hannity on Fox News featured a discussion by the Great American Panel about high gas prices, which host Sean Hannity claimed are “now gonna go up to three, four, five dollars a gallon again.” The panel ruefully noted that Arab sheiks possess great amounts of oil, and pointed out a recent statement by Kuwait’s oil minister that he believes the market can withstand $100-per-barrel oil. After noting that Kuwait is a country that “would not exist [but] for us,” Hannity angrily offered his remedy:
