Japan Airlines’ CEO pays himself less than the pilots, takes the bus to work

Monday, February 28th, 2011

When Japan Airlines hit hard times in 2009 and began to lay off its staff, JAL CEO Haruka Nishimatsu cut his own pay to less than that of his pilots and eliminated all his perks. He now rides public transit to the office and eats in the employee cafeteria, standing in line with his colleagues.

Program cuts vs tax breaks

Monday, February 28th, 2011

House leaders are unfortunately restricting their proposed budget cuts for the remainder of fiscal year 2011 to nonsecurity discretionary spending in an attempt to tame a $1.3 trillion deficit. This approach is especially shortsighted since the Federal Treasury loses twice as much revenue due to tax breaks than Congress appropriates on all nonsecurity discretionary spending.

The chart below compares the 10 safety-net programs slated for deep cuts with the cost of the tax breaks that should also be considered for reduction or elimination to bring the budget into balance. The column on the left is a list of safety-net programs that have already been targets of the House leadership’s budget ax. The column on the right is the cost to specified tax breaks (see bottom of page for sources).

“watch out for that union guy– he wants a piece of your crumbs.”

Monday, February 28th, 2011

“A unionized public employee, a teabagger, and a CEO are sitting at a table. In the middle of the table is a plate with a dozen cookies on it. The CEO reaches across and takes 11 cookies, then looks at the teabagger and says “watch out for that union guy– he wants a piece of your crumbs.”

Another year of massive corporations paying no taxes

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

BANK OF AMERICA: In 2009, Bank of America didn’t pay a single penny in federal income taxes, exploiting the tax code so as to avoid paying its fair share. “Oh, yeah, this happens all the time,” said Robert Willens, a tax accounting expert interviewed by McClatchy. “If you go out and try to make money and you don’t do it, why should the government pay you for your losses?” asked Bob McIntyre of Citizens for Tax Justice. The same year, the mega-bank’s top executives received pay “ranging from $6 million to nearly $30 million.”

BOEING: Despite receiving billions of dollars from the federal government every single year in taxpayer subsidies from the U.S. government, Boeing didn’t “pay a dime of U.S. federal corporate income taxes” between 2008 and 2010.

CITIGROUP: Citigroup’s deferred income taxes for the third quarter of 2010 amounted to a grand total of $0.00. At the same time, Citigroup has continued to pay its staff lavishly. “John Havens, the head of Citigroup’s investment bank, is expected to be the bank’s highest paid executive for the second year in a row, with a compensation package worth $9.5 million.”

EXXON-MOBIL: The oil giant uses offshore subsidiaries in the Caribbean to avoid paying taxes in the United States. Although Exxon-Mobil paid $15 billion in taxes in 2009, not a penny of those taxes went to the American Treasury. This was the same year that the company overtook Wal-Mart in the Fortune 500. Meanwhile the total compensation of Exxon-Mobil’s CEO the same year was over $29,000,000.

GENERAL ELECTRIC: In 2009, General Electric — the world’s largest corporation — filed more than 7,000 tax returns and still paid nothing to U.S. government. They managed to do this by a tax code that essentially subsidizes companies for losing profits and allows them to set up tax havens overseas. That same year GE CEO Jeffery Immelt — who recently scored a spot on a White House economic advisory board — “earned total compensation of $9.89 million.” In 2002, Immelt displayed his lack of economic patriotism, saying, “When I am talking to GE managers, I talk China, China, China, China, China….I am a nut on China. Outsourcing from China is going to grow to 5 billion.”

WELLS FARGO: Despite being the fourth largest bank in the country, Wells Fargo was able to escape paying federal taxes by writing all of its losses off after its acquisition of Wachovia. Yet in 2009 the chief executive of Wells Fargo also saw his compensation “more than double” as he earned “a salary of $5.6 million paid in cash and stock and stock awards of more than $13 million.”

The moral superiority of Newt Gingrich

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

“Newt Gingrich would like to remind everybody that marriage is between one man & one woman whom you abandon riddled with cancer on her hospital bed while you fuck the shit out of your mistress whom you later marry & cheat on with a third woman while screaming with Godly moral outrage about the infidelities of the president. Crystal clear now?” ~ Molly Christine Swipas

?”I just saw a clip where Newt was berating Obama saying “He put his hand on the Bible and made an oath to God…” or some such nonsense. What about the oath HE took to his God? Till death do you part. He parted twice without any death. That revision must be in the Newt Testament.” ~ Chuck Padgett

Canadian mining issue highlights differences between US and them

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

Canada isn’t like the United States — it’s still a first world country, where corporations are supposed to exist to benefit people, not the other way around. They don’t just have universal health care — they even have something called the Investment Canada Act, which says multinationals like Vale can only invest in Canadian industries if it will benefit all of Canada. I know, crazy!

South Korean internet speeds

Friday, February 25th, 2011

The average household income in South Korea is about $38,000 or so

The average American income is about $47,000 or so

South Korea is looking at GIGABIT internet speeds and the cost will be about $27 per month.

If the cost were related to income this would be around $35 per month for an American home.

America is getting ripped off!

Home Depot Founder: Retailers Who Don’t Support GOP “Should Be Shot”

Friday, February 25th, 2011

This is what Home Depot’s founder Bernie Marcus said on a conference call yesterday:

“If a retailer has not gotten involved with this, if he has not spent money on this election, if he has not sent money to Norm Coleman and these other guys,” Mr. Marcus said, apparently referring to Republican senators facing tough re-election fights, then those retailers “should be shot; should be thrown out of their goddamn jobs.”

It’s nice to know Home Depot supports the death penalty for not supporting their politics. The coming EFCA fight is going to be bloody.

A real message I received from a Teabagger

Friday, February 25th, 2011

I received this on my youtube account.  This is a direct copy and paste of his message to me without one change at all.

——————

Lets say this

I want to end these awful CHILD LABOR LAWS. As a hedge fund manager who is going to be making big money because of my investments in Palm Oil and Malaysia I feel if I want to hire a 7 year old to work in the mining araes of West Virginia and pay him less money, WHY SHOULDN’T I. After all at least the 7 year old would be an American citizen. Second 40 Hour work weeks, that is a joke. One of the reasons companies are going overseas is because people are working less hours with more pay. Thay should work more hours like 60 Hours a week with only one day off. Saturday to celebrate the SABATH DAY. All the other days people should have to work. One vacation a year is all the American worker needs. Let me put it to you this way, People claim to be hurt and take disability, but how many times does the local media show Firemen and Teachers taking advantage of the system.

Thank God for Glenn Beck, Monica Crowley and Rush Limbaugh.

THE CORPORATIONS RUN AMERICA. Less Pay More Hours of work. The end of child labor laws. Thomas Jefferson Hired Child Labor why shouldn’t I or other Americans hire 6 year old African boys to clean our houses for 1 dollar an hour. Thank God Bush and the New World Order have now allowed the National Guard to put there citizens in line. Bush signed the bill that allows are Army to patrol the streets. THE CORPORATIONS RUN AMERICA NOW.

YES BABY ITS TRUE.

LONG LIVE THE NEW WORLD ORDER.

——————————

And THAT is the message I received.

Just speechless.

Video: Assembly GOP Passes Budget Repair Bill

Friday, February 25th, 2011

MADISON, Wisc. — The debate in the Assembly appeared to be a few hours away from ending when Speaker Pro Tem Bill Kramer interrupted their speeches and called the vote. It was gaveled in with lightning speed, less than the standard 15 seconds — it was so fast that 28 members did not even vote on it, some out of protest but some failing to reach their buzzers. There were 51 ayes and 17 nays, and the nays included Republicans Dean Kaufert, Lee Nerison, Richard Spanbauer, and Travis Tranel.

Democrats exploded as soon as the vote was called, yelling “Cowards!” and “Shame!” at the Republicans filing out of the room.

by William Blum

published by Common Courage Press in 1995

“[American leaders] are perhaps not so much immoral as they are amoral. It’s not that they take pleasure in causing so much death and suffering. It’s that they just don’t care … the same that could be said about a sociopath. As long as the death and suffering advance the agenda of the empire, as long as the right people and the right corporations gain wealth and power and privilege and prestige, as long as the death and suffering aren’t happening to them or people close to them … then they just don’t care about it happening to other people, including the American soldiers whom they throw into wars and who come home-the ones who make it back alive-with Agent Orange or Gulf War Syndrome eating away at their bodies. American leaders would not be in the positions they hold if they were bothered by such things.”

US government assassination plots since World War II

“It was in the early days of the fighting in Vietnam that a Vietcong officer said to his American prisoner: “You were our heroes after the War. We read American books and saw American films, and a common phrase in those days was ‘to be as rich and as wise as an American’. What happened?

“An American might have been asked something similar by a Guatemalan, an Indonesian or a Cuban during the ten years previous, or by a Uruguayan, a Chilean or a Greek in the decade subsequent. The remarkable international goodwill and credibility enjoyed by the United States at the close of the Second World War was dissipated country by country, intervention by intervention.”

Washington Post- Obama’s Apology Tour NEVER HAPPENED

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

4 out of 4 Pinocchios for this canard meaning it is a lie.

The claim that Obama is an apologist for America actually began to take shape shortly after he became president. It had been bubbling in the conservative blogs before Karl Rove, the former political adviser to George W. Bush, published an article titled “The President’s Apology Tour” in the Wall Street Journal on April 23, 2009, just three months after Obama took the oath of office.

By June, the conservative Heritage Foundation began running a list: “Barack Obama’s Top 10 Apologies: How the President Has Humiliated a Superpower.”

Public-opinion polling suggests the idea has resonance among the American public. A December Gallup poll found that only 58 percent of those surveyed agreed that Obama believed the United States has a unique character that makes it the greatest country in the world; 37 percent said he did not. By contrast, 74 percent thought George W. Bush did, 77 percent though Bill Clinton did, and 86 percent thought Ronald Reagan did. Among Republicans, 61 percent thought Obama did not believe in the greatness of America.

Let’s look at the evidence.

A Liberal News Network? Here is a plan-

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Let’s imagine a fictional cable network called LNN – the Liberal News Network. What might the morning news on such a channel be?

The show might lead with pictures of starving children all over the world, so that while you sat down to breakfast, you’d be reminded of just how lucky you were to have been born in the U.S., and how others are still very much in need.

Viewers would be encouraged to send in at least some of their morning latte money to feed a baby for a week. Each morning, the number of children who had been moved out of poverty would also be shown. If there were truly a liberal media, that number would be growing, daily, by leaps and bounds.

You would see pictures of the war – really horrible, tragic pictures, showing not just death, but the maiming, the suffering, the devastation to innocents we currently think of solely as “collateral damage.” Each day, the grievances of both sides would be fully aired.

We’d hear not only from our own soldiers but from soldiers we were fighting, so we could start to understand why they are fighting back. If we are truly the good guys, there’d be no reason for anyone to oppose us.

Embarrassed Republicans Admit They’ve Been Thinking Of Eisenhower Whole Time They’ve Been Praising Reagan

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

A funny story with a TON of truth by The Onion.

—–

The GOP’s humiliating blunder was discovered last weekend by RNC chairman Reince Priebus, who realized his party had been extolling “completely the wrong guy” after he watched the History Channel special Eisenhower: An American Portrait.

“When I heard about Eisenhower’s presidential accomplishments—holding down the national debt, keeping inflation in check, and fighting for balanced budgets—it hit me that we’d clearly gotten their names mixed up at some point,” Priebus told reporters. “I couldn’t believe we’d been associating terms like ‘visionary,’ ‘principled,’ and ‘bold’ with President Reagan. That wasn’t him at all—that was Ike.”

“We deeply regret misattributing such a distinguished and patriotic legacy to Mr. Reagan,” Priebus added. “We really screwed up.”

What the Founding Fathers really thought about Corporations

Monday, February 21st, 2011

To say that the founding fathers supported corporations is very absurd. Its quite the opposite in fact. Corporations like the East India Trading Company were despised by the founders and they were just one reason why they chose to revolt against England. Corporations represented the moneyed interests much like they do today and they often wielded political power, sometimes to the point of governing a colony all by themselves like the Massachusetts Bay Company did.

What Conservatives really want

Monday, February 21st, 2011

In the 2008 campaign, candidate Obama accurately described the basis of American democracy: Empathy — citizens caring for each other, both social and personal responsibility — acting on that care, and an ethic of excellence. From these, our freedoms and our way of life follow, as does the role of government: to protect and empower everyone equally. Protection includes safety, health, the environment, pensions and empowerment starts with education and infrastructure. No one can be free without these, and without a commitment to care and act on that care by one’s fellow citizens.

The conservative worldview rejects all of that.

Republican Governor Deliberately Spent Wisconsin Surplus To Pick Fight With Unions

It’s important that people understand this: This is a fight Gov. Walker picked for the specific purpose of breaking the unions. Wisconsin had a surplus, and as soon as he was sworn in, Walker gave it away to special interests in order to put the state into deficit. Is it a coincidence that every Republican governor is suddenly going after the unions and the pensions? Is it simply bubbling up from the ground for no special reason? Hell, no.

Race and wealth comparison shows America has a long way to go in being equal

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

The wealth gap is the most acute indicator of racial inequality. Based on data from the 2002 Survey of Income and Program Participation, white median household net worth is about $90,000; in contrast it is only about $8,000 for the median Latino household and a mere $6,000 for the median black household. The median Latino or black household would have to save nearly 100 percent of its income for at least three consecutive years to close the gap. Furthermore, 85 percent of black and Latino households have a net worth below the median white household. Regardless of age, household structure, education, occupation, or income, black households typically have less than a quarter of the wealth of otherwise comparable white households.

A letter from a man who has been out of work and has no prospect of work and his only direction is suicide.

From Mark’s letter:

To the unemployed, sick, disabled and poor:
Hello,

I’m unemployed over two years now, a 99er without any benefits for three months. I followed Unemployed Friends almost from its start, never posted until now, but am grateful for my time with you all. I did as asked with calls and e-mails, etc. I’ve a confession to make to you all. I’m a criminal.

I’ve obeyed the 10 commandments and all laws except: I’m unemployed and that’s now a crime, I’m poor and that’s a crime, I’m worthless surplus population and that’s a crime, I’m a main street American Citizen born and raised in the USA and that’s now a crime, and I’m euthanizing myself as I write this note — so arrest my corpse. This isn’t a call for help, the deed is done, it’s not what I wanted. Death is my best available option. It’s not just that my bank account is $4, that I’ve not eaten in a week, not because hunger pangs are agonizing (I’m a wimp), not because I live in physical and mental anguish, not because the landlady is banging on the door non-stop and I face eviction, not that Congress and President have sent a strong message they no longer help the unemployed. It’s because I’m a law abiding though worthless, long-term unemployed older man who is surplus population. Had I used my college education to rip people off and steal from the elderly, poor, disabled and main street Americans I would be wearing different shoes now — a petty king. Hard work, honesty, loving kindness, charity and mercy, and becoming unemployed and destitute unable to pay your bills are all considered foolishness and high crimes in America now. Whereas stealing and lying and cheating and being greedy to excess and destroying the fabric of America is rewarded and protected — even making such people petty king and petty queens among us.

Since the end of 2008, when corporate America began enjoying the resumption of growth, profits have swelled from an annualized pace of $995 billion to the current $1.66 trillion as of the end of September 2010. Over the same period, the number of non-farm jobs counted by the Labor Department has slipped from 13.4 million to 13 million — there is no recovery for the unemployed and main street. We taxpayers have handed trillions of dollars to the same bank and insurance industry that started our economic disaster with its reckless gambling. We bailed out General Motors. We distributed tax cuts to businesses that were supposed to use this lubrication to expand and hire. For our dollars, we have been rewarded with starvation, homelessness and a plague of fear — a testament to post-national capitalism.

FOX News loves the Constitution unless it hates the Constitution

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

On Fox and Friends today, Fox News argued against liberty and freedom with a claim that the Constitution is too outdated to handle the war on terror. Gretchen Carlson said, “Ok, well back in the 1700s and 1800s, we didn’t have this thing called the war on terror where you have to get to the bottom of things quickly.”

Fox News has finally shown their true colors on the air. The network doesn’t care about freedom or liberty. They don’t even care about the Constitution. Their singular interest is in advocating for the Republican Party. Fox News isn’t about protecting our freedom. They attacked the Constitution as an outdated document that doesn’t need to be followed all of the time. Fox News is nothing, but the Republican/neo-con propaganda network. Study: Most high school biology teachers don’t endorse evolution

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

Here’s the position of the National Science Teachers Association on evolution:

“The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) strongly supports the position that evolution is a major unifying concept in science and should be included in the K–12 science education frameworks and curricula. Furthermore, if evolution is not taught, students will not achieve the level of scientific literacy they need. This position is consistent with that of the National Academies, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and many other scientific and educational organizations.

“NSTA also recognizes that evolution has not been emphasized in science curricula in a manner commensurate to its importance because of official policies, intimidation of science teachers, the general public’s misunderstanding of evolutionary theory, and a century of controversy. In addition, teachers are being pressured to introduce creationism, “creation science,” and other nonscientific views, which are intended to weaken or eliminate the teaching of evolution.”

The GOP yapping about cutting programs flies in the face of what Americans want

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

More favor an increase in spending than a decrease on 15 of 18 issues tested in the poll. Now, these numbers aren’t all that clear cut. Also, support for spending decreases has edged up.

But the overall conclusion is clear: Once you start to talk specifics, suddenly the public’s aversion to government spending rapidly evaporates.

Ask any House Republican about repealing President Barack Obama’s health care law, and you’ll get the same fiery, self-assured talking points about tearing down what Speaker John Boehner has called a “monstrosity.”

But talk to some of the 16 freshman lawmakers who have declined their government health benefits, and you’ll hear a different side of the story — about tough out-of-pocket expenses, pre-existing conditions and support for health reforms that would help those who struggle with their coverage. As they venture into the free market for health insurance, these lawmakers — many of whom swept into office fueled by tea party anger over the health care law — are facing monthly premiums of $1,200 and fears of double-digit rate hikes.

The experience has caused some of them to think harder about the “replace” part of the “repeal and replace” mantra the GOP has adopted regarding the health care law.

“I have a niece who has pre-existing conditions, and I worry about her if she was ever to lose her job,” said Florida Rep. Richard Nugent, one of the freshman lawmakers who declined federal health insurance benefits.

Every single House Republican voted to repeal the health care law last month.

“I can simply, honestly say that this is going to impact my wife and I to a fairly serious degree, like it would any average American out there,” said first-time Rep. Joe Walsh of Illinois.

Walsh’s wife has a pre-existing condition and will need a procedure in the coming months, but because he declined federal benefits, they’re paying for it out of pocket. Meanwhile, Walsh is contributing to a health savings account to cover his expenses.

Sarah Palin’s Alaska looking for Socialistic handout from state

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

A producer of “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” reality series is listed in an application seeking film production tax credits from the state.

The heavily redacted 2010 document names Maria Baltazzi as executive producer of the unidentified production.

The Alaska Film Office does not disclose specifics about productions seeking tax credits until final approval. The Palin show, which debuted in November, is not among those listed as approved by the office.

If the Palin series tapped into the tax credit program, it would mean the show would retroactively be subsidized by the state.

Baltazzi is credited in filmographies as a producer of three episodes in the eight-part TLC show featuring Palin, a former Alaska governor and the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee. The series was produced by Mark Burnett of “Survivor” reality TV show fame. The series concluded in January, and a representative for the cable channel has said it was always intended to air for a single season only.

Baltazzi told The Associated Press on Thursday that she worked on the series, and said it was the first time in years she’s worked in Alaska. But she referred all other questions to Burnett’s office, which did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The new official Tea Party Magazine..this is real…not a joke…but very funny!

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Introducing Tea Party Review — the first national magazine for, by, and about the Tea Party Movement — and it appears to be everything we could have hoped it to be!

The magazine’s website contains a list of what we can find inside its inaugural issue. It starts out pretty bland, with pieces like “Complete coverage of the 2012 presidential campaign.”

Then it turns awesome — with articles like ¨The Left’s War on Science and Reason” and “How the Top Colleges Turn Kids into Stupid Leftists” (seriously).

Here is a sample of the list — containing the articles we are most, most excited to read:

  • ¨Obama’s War on the First Amendment… and the Rest of the Constitution
  • ¨Dirty Tricks and Vote Fraud in the 2010 Election
  • ¨Glenn Beck vs. the Communist Party: A Tale of Two Rallies
  • ¨The Left’s War on Science and Reason
  • ¨How the Top Colleges Turn Kids into Stupid Leftists

We resist the urge to call out the Tea Party for being behind the times by only now getting into print media — they do, after all, have an animated avatar news anchor. We can’t read the articles yet — but in the meantime, you can sample the blog, with each piece written by an “approved Tea Party writer” (how does one get to be an “approved Tea Party writer,” one wonders).

Print media is a tough world, Tea Party Review. We wish you the best.

Former FOX News insider spills the beans on the most obvious story of the past 10 years…FOX News just makes up stuff and airs it as true.

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Asked what most viewers and observers of Fox News would be surprised to learn about the controversial cable channel, a former insider from the world of Rupert Murdoch was quick with a response: “I don’t think people would believe it’s as concocted as it is; that stuff is just made up.”

Indeed, a former Fox News employee who recently agreed to talk with Media Matters confirmed what critics have been saying for years about Murdoch’s cable channel. Namely, that Fox News is run as a purely partisan operation, virtually every news story is actively spun by the staff, its primary goal is to prop up Republicans and knock down Democrats, and that staffers at Fox News routinely operate without the slightest regard for fairness or fact checking.

“It is their M.O. to undermine the administration and to undermine Democrats,” says the source. “They’re a propaganda outfit but they call themselves news.”

And that’s the word from inside Fox News.
